Target Audience

This program is designed for the wide range of medical and health professionals who administer HIV tests in clinical settings. It is designed to accommodate learners with different backgrounds and varying levels of expertise in HIV testing.

Educational Needs Addressed

As health care institutions and their corresponding laboratories begin to widely roll out the 4th generation HIV tests, there will be clinician gaps in knowledge about the new test and how it differs from previous generation tests in terms of a number of characteristics, including: how it detects HIV, test sensitivity, time it takes to run the test after sample collection, time it takes to detect HIV, ability to detect acute HIV. These gaps in knowledge can have implications for patient follow up and re-screening, thus creating potential gaps in performance.

Educational/Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

Section 1:

  • Discuss the generational progression of HIV testing
  • Define the testing window and how the virus is detected in each generation of tests
  • Describe the turnaround time and test sensitivity within each testing generation

Section 2:

  • Describe the key characteristics of the HIV test(s) the learner is currently using
  • Discuss how the key characteristics of the current test(s) compare with those of a 4th generation assay
  • Generate a comparison chart that can be printed and used as a reference

Section 3:

  • Describe how to interpret 4th generation test results
  • Describe how 4th generation testing affects patient follow-up
  • Describe verification follow-up testing options
  • Discuss appropriate follow-up for patients based on a specified clinical setting, test results and risk factors
